What is Decarboxylation?

Decarboxylation is a chemical reaction that removes a carboxyl group from a molecule.  In the context of cannabis, it’s the process that activates the compounds in the plant, making them effective when consumed.

THC-A vs THC

Cannabis in its raw form contains THC-A (Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid), which is non-psychoactive.  This means that if you were to consume raw cannabis, you wouldn’t experience the ‘high’ that is often associated with THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is the main psychoactive component of cannabis.

Why Decarboxylate Cannabis?

  3. Spread Evenly on a Baking Sheet: Place a piece of parchment paper on the baking sheet and spread the ground cannabis evenly over it.
  4. Bake with Care: Bake the cannabis for about 30-40 minutes. Check it occasionally to make sure it’s not burning.  You are looking for a light brownish color, not charred.
  5. Cooling Down: After baking, let the cannabis cool down.  This is now your decarboxylated cannabis, ready for cooking or infusion!
  6. Storage: If you’re not using it immediately, store it in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.

  • Start Small: If you’re new to cannabis cooking, start with small amounts to understand its potency and effects.
  • Consistency: Ensure even heat distribution during decarboxylation for consistent potency.
  • Ventilation: This process will produce a strong odor.  Ensure good kitchen ventilation.
